Samsung Galaxy S4 : Specs, review and latest features – Must read

The most awaited Samsung’s flagship smart phone Galaxy S4 has finally announced after long speculations/ rumours in New York’s Radio City Music hall on 14th March 2013. The curtains pulled off of beautiful device in a Radio city music hall fully packed with reporters, business owners and the company representatives came to grab as much information as possible about the stunning device. Good news for the people who were eagarly waiting for the most anticipated smart phone of the year 2013 that they will not have to wait much more, it will be available to buy starting next month (not all the places though).

We are yet to complete Q1 of the year 2013 and big guns like HTC, SONY, BLACKBERRY, LG, ZTE, HUAWEI have already introduced their flagship smartphones namely HTC One, Sony Xperia Z, BlackBerry Z10, LG Optimus G Pro, ZTE Grand S, Huawei Ascent Mate respectively. Almost all big guns have announced their smartphone this year except Apple, we are waiting to see next iteration of iPhone, whether its iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S.

Now the consumers have lots of choices to elect a smart phone based on their needs and the companies they have faith into. When Sony and HTC announced their flagship smart phone Xperia Z and HTC One in January this year, Blackberry didn’t want to stay behind and announced its flagship smart phone BlackBerry Z 10 in February with lots of interesting features. The Blackberry Z 10 have ability to become savior of Blackberry and compete rivals.

In february itself, LG unveiled Optimius G Pro with massive 5.5” screen and robust qualcomm snapdragon 600 chipset processor clocked at 1.7 Ghz. Samsung decided not to delay and the South Korea based tech giant unwrapped its Galaxy series smart phone, SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 on 14th March 2013 in New York. What a cool device! Dude

Lets discuss each feature of this whooping device separately.

Design & Display

In a first view, it looks similar to predecessor Samsung Galaxy S3 if you don’t pay attention to its size. Samsung Galaxy S4 joins big screen smart phone club with a massive 5 inches super AMOLED capacitive touch screen having screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 and 440 ppi pixel density. It beats LG Optimus G Pro having pixel density of 400 ppi and BlackBerry Z 10 with pixel density of 355 ppi and stay behind from HTC One with pixel density of 468 ppi. However, It ties with Sony Xperia Z having pixel density 440 ppi. With a dimensions of 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm, Samsung managed to slim down Galaxy S4 further to 7.9 mm as compared to predecessor Galaxy S3 with depth measuring 8.6 mm. Galaxy S4 uses Corning Gorilla glass 3 to give protection to the screen from being scratched. At 130 grams weight, this fabulous device leaves its predecessor and its rivals, Xperia Z, Blackberry Z10, HTC One, LG Optimus G Pro behind and becomes lightest among them. However it is slightly heavier than Apple iPhone 5 which measures at 112g. The body cover is made up polycarbonate substance which gives a premium look in hand. It will be available in two colors, black mist and white frost.

Operating System

Samsung Galaxy S4 runs latest version of most powerful operating system, Android 4.2.2 JellyBean. On top of that Samsung introduced lots of other unique features like S translator, Air Gestures, Smart Pause, Smart Scroll to make consumer’s life super easy. With the help of S translator, you can translate emails, text messages being exchanged to and from any language. Talking about Air Gestures, this unique feature lets users use smart phone without even holding in hand. Just swipe your hand across the screen and see it changing. To answer calls and scroll pages, just wave your hand up/down, it will do it for you. Air view option will ease your life to play videos or preview emails by just hovering finger.

"Smart Pause" a feature already seen in its predecessor made more advanced in Galaxy S4 that stops the video when you take eyes away from the smart phone and starts again when you look back to the device. In addition to Smart Pause, Smart scroll is a another great feature which allows you to scroll up/ down pages, email when you tilt it.      


This whooping device features two different types of processors based on the locations. In some region, Samsung Galaxy S4 sports octo-core processor with Exynos 5 chipset clocked at 1.6 Ghz however in other regions it will come with 1.9 Ghz quad-core Snapdragon processor. The speculations and rumours about its processor proved correct and with Exynos 5 processor supported by 2 GB RAM, it switches between different apps with no time lag even at multi tasking.


It comes with internal memory of 16/32/64 GB, good enough to store media files and other important data. The 16/32 GB variant handset's memory can be easily further expended to 64 GB with the help of microSD card.


The heavily advertised camera of Samsung Galaxy S4 will amaze you with lot of interesting features which were never seen before in any smart phone. With 13.0 megapixels rear and 2.0 megapixels front facing camera, you can shoot video or opt for video chat with a great clearity. It records HD 1080p video @ 60fps, 30fps. The front facing camera is also capable of shooting 1080p video @30fps. One of the new feature that we see in Galaxy S4 is dual shot that enables you to use both rear and front facing camera simultaneously. The front facing camera focus can be moved anywhere on the screen while taking  snaps of your loved one or record video. Another interesting feature that Galaxy S4 have is Drama Shot which combines series of photographs taken in a single frame that reminds you about actual situation when you see the photograph after years.


The battery of Samsung Galaxy S4 is improved further with 2600mAH power which lasts longer than its predecessor as said. The Li-ion battery used in SGS4 is having 300 mAh more power than Galaxy S3.

Other features

Group Play – Group play is another great feature that SGS4 have. It works with the help of wireless and allows multiple SGS4 smart phone interlinked together and play games, share documents, photos and listen to the music. Other features in SGS4 which although common in all smart phones but necessary are 3.5 mm jack, DLAN, microSIM, hot spot, HDMI port, NFC Support, Bluetooth v4.0, Wifi 802.11 a,b,g,n,ac, SMS, MMS, Push mail, IM etc.
